I have a 580K Construction King backhoe and no manual for it. I believe it is the early model K. The 4 speed shifter is on the floor, to the right of the steering wheel. Serial # is JJG0019878.
I have worked this machine fairly hard since I got it and she has performed very well until about a week ago. I was on a routine drainage project,I dropped the front bucket to dig, tried to push forward and it started jerking, like it was slipping cogs or something. At that point reverse worked fine but forward got worse.
I noticed underneath the machine that the rotor on the shaft from the differential(is this the torque converter) just below the short drive shaft had considerable wobble to it.
At first I thought this might be the problem but after reading other posts about similar problems I am not so sure now. I drained the fluid and replaced it from what I am assuming is the shuttle. It has a small oil pan with a side drain plug. Correct me if I am wrong, but this machine between the motor and the rear chunk has, in this order, the transmission with the threaded open hole at the bottom, then the shuttle attached to it, a short drive shaft, then the torque converter with a shaft and rotor below the drive shaft and the parking brake assembly attached to this rotor.
I have noticed that when the machine is cold it works fine in forward and reverse, for a short time then slowly gets to the point that it no longer will move at all in forward and barely moves in reverse. I am stumped to this point and would very much appreciate any expert advice on what this could be and how to repair it.

I have a 480D case Backhoe and it is very simalar to the 580K. From what you say, I think you have shuttle problems. The drivetrain is simalar to a standard shift truck other then the placement of components. The engine drives the shuttle which has clutches and planitary gears. It is basically an automatic transmission that doese't change gears, just forward and reverse. The shuttle assembly transfers power to the transaxle (Combined transmission and deferential) through the drive shaft. You can go to www.casece.com ,click on search for parts, then enter 580K and it is basically a parts book on line. This is very valuable information and will show you how the machine is assembled.--I hope this is helpful information---

I appreciate your info on the parts website. That is very helpful being able to see the parts and how they assemble. That will come in mighty handy. I am still confused some on why it pulls fine on first crank up and then loses forward pull very quickly after warm up. Reverse works but it is starting to act like forward did at first.
It could be something in the cooling lines causing problems but I am drawing straws now. My mechanic is out of service right now and without him, so is my backhoe. Maybe an ace Case mechanic will stumble on to this post and give me guidance.

Tim, I have built hundreds of automatic transmissions and the shuttle is just that. When the machine is cold the fluid is thicker and you will have less slippage. The pump could be worn and thus causing low pressure. I dought if you have a fluid restriction but it is possible. If the pump is worn then the damage to the friction clutches is already done, and this means a rebuild. The more you run it the greater the damage. Sort of like running a knocking engine. Please be aware that I have never built one of these shuttles and these are only the opinion of a 62 year old-- mechanic--machinist.

Jiles, A rebuild sounds complicated and expensive, considering my mechanic is not available, but I will research it further and if that's what it takes there is no other choice but to bite that bullet and go with it.

You have the early series K which is the case 580e transmission. this is a good thing becuase they are cheaper to fix.

the later K's with the shifter on the console is a different machine when it come to the tranny. the tranmission and shuttle is in the axle.

as long as you keep the fluids changed (not cheap anymore) these transmission will last forever ( well 14k hours)

get the manual on ebay as there will be test points for pressure which will narrow things down. but sound like 90% shuttle problem
